Horticulture and food production is undergoing a period of immense change. Discerning consumers demand sustainable production of nutritious and affordable horticultural fresh produce. This requires a thorough understanding of the science behind production but also novel systems that embrace change with respect to resources and inputs, including water use. This module will draw on examples of supply and demand from advanced production systems to urban and low technology systems to investigate and predict future trends and new developments. Through this module, students can demonstrate their holistic understanding of commercial horticultural production including the science of plant growth and development, whilst being attuned to the many constraints and opportunities facing the industry. Integrative thinking is a key feature: practical problem solving skills and the ability to cross-link research to current practice is an important element of this Level 6 module .
